An initiative created within the scope of the Regional Rural Development Programme (RDP) 2014-2020 - Operation Type 16.1.01 – Operational Groups of the European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability – Focus Area 4B - Project NITRATI FERRARA
FERRARA NITRATES: AGRONOMIC TECHNICNIQUES FOR THE PREVENTION OF NITRATE POLLUTION AND THE CONSERVATION OF ORGANIC MATTER
The Innovation Plan starts from the assumption that an increase in the availability of carbon matter in soil corresponds to a reduction in water percolation and surface runoff phenomena and determines excellent conditions for denitrification and the complete removal of nitrates (anoxia and the availability of carbon substrates). The Operational Group seeks to develop agronomic practices which can maintain or increase the level of organic matter, through the return of organic matter to the soil with fertilizer (compost) and conservative agricultural practices.
These practices are compared with conventional ones on two farms with different soils, representative of the main pedological types in the Ferrara Province. The Operational Group has flanked agronomic activity with research to evaluate the principal outcomes expected, which are:
Maintenance/increase in the standard of organic matter in the terrain, with expected effects on the nitrogen cycle;
Stabilization of soil structure, an increase in bearing capacity of the terrain and reduction in compacting due to pouring rain (splash);
An increase in soil water retention and a reduction in peak hydraulic loads in an area like the province of Ferrara which is at high risk of flooding;
Increase in the biodiversity and metabolic activity of the soil, with positive effects such as an improvement in the rate of macro- and micronutrient recirculation, an increase in intrinsic fertility and the mineralization of pesticide residues.
