AGRI-FORESTER: GUIDELINES FOR SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT, ENHANCEMENT OF ECOSYSTEM SERVICES AND CARBON SEQUESTRATION IN THE FORESTRY SYSTEM IN EMILIA-ROMAGNA
The woods of the agro-forestry companies in Emili-Romagna, located in the Apennine hills and on the plain, play without doubt a positive role in carbon sequestration and consequently in the range of strategies to mitigate climate change.
AGRI-FORESTER is a 30-month project funded by the Emilia-Romagna Region for Measure 16 of the RDP 2014-2020. It aims to deepen the knowledge regarding organic matter content and related carbon sequestration in the main forest soils pertaining to the geo-pedological environments of the partner farms, promote ecosystem services provided by woods, share and understand which forestry techniques can foster sustainability and in particular the storage of carbon in the soil.
The innovative operational group (IOG) is led by I.TER and includes UNIBO (“agrarian chemistry and soil science” scientific area), four agro-forestry companies and the training institution DINAMICA. Its objective is to become a leading regional spokesperson for the initiation of a cultural journey that enhances the forestry ecosystem connected to agro-forestry farms, stimulating the debate between the various actors in the regional forestry sector, agricultural sector and the partners of the project. The participatory working method adopted intends to foster a fruitful exchange between the producers and the researchers involved, by activating a course of study and research to collect data and measurements to quantify carbon sequestration and enhance ecosystem services.
This cultural journey aims to bring forestry producers closer to common decisions designed to bring to light the important role the company woods and forests play in carbon sequestration, and providing ecosystem services, including the use of the territory’s landscape for tourism.
In summary, the working group envisages producers and researchers collaborating on the activities in the plan, to find a collective answer to these questions:
What “weight” do the woods of the agro-forestry companies in Emilia-Romagna have in carbon sequestration and supplying ecosystem services?
Which silvicultural techniques should agro-forestry producers use and what costs must they bear to manage their woods sustainably?
What actions can be initiated to facilitate sustainable management of company woods and the aggregation of owners?
Summarising the results and the answers obtained will permit the identification and sharing of “guidelines for sustainable management, enhancement of ecosystem services and carbon sequestration in the forestry system in Emilia-Romagna connected to agro-forestry companies”.
